Summer House star Wes Wilson's family tragedy finally gets a real update. On April 22, 2026, Carroll County deputies responded around 10:25 p.m. to a shooting at a home on West 14th Street in Carrollton, Missouri. Inside they found 75-year-old Gayle R. Wilson dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Still on scene was her 28-year-old grandson, Dakota Alexander Sweeney — cousin of Wes Wilson — who was arrested without incident. A holster was found on him. The next day he was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
The key witness is Gayle's husband of 50 years and Dakota's grandfather, Roger Wilson. According to the probable cause statement, Dakota and Gayle argued earlier that night about him not helping with chores. He then sat on a separate couch next to her for about 30 minutes and, without warning, allegedly shot her in the head. Dakota lived in the home. Gayle was the stepmother of Wes's father, Bruce, and Dakota's mother, Kelly — a step-grandmother who raised that family for five decades. Her obituary lists both Wes and Dakota among her seven grandchildren.
This happened the night before Wes filmed the Summer House Season 10 reunion in New York. That timing explains a lot about how checked out he looked, including those beta blockers talk. His personal life and Bravo career blew up in the same 24 hours. He has not issued a public statement on the case. He later confirmed he was not returning to Summer House after Season 10.
Dakota pled not guilty on April 24 and was assigned a public defender. He has been held without bond at Caldwell County Jail. At a May 6 bond hearing, the judge ordered a mental examination. On June 3, the defense asked that the examiner also consider whether he needs hospital treatment regardless of fitness for trial. Prosecutors did not object and the judge approved it. A hearing was set for July 29, 2026. As of late August 2026, there is no public reporting on that outcome, no trial date, and no conviction. These are accusations, not proof of guilt. First-degree murder in Missouri can carry life without parole or the death penalty. The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is leading the investigation.
Dakota previously worked as a Missouri Department of Conservation agent, appointed in 2024 after academy training in criminal investigations and firearms. A spokesperson said he left in early spring 2025 and would not give a reason because of ongoing litigation.
